I started photographing my dear friend Josh more than five years ago. I never set out to make a continuous series, but these images have nevertheless evolved into an intriguing whole. They embody my growth as a photographer and reveal a subtle, interesting shift in the relationship between Josh, the camera, and me. It should be noted that, though Josh is not a smoker, he has a cigarette at some point in each sitting. Often, having something to "do" (like roll and smoke a cigarette) helps us both relax in the presence of the camera, making it more likely that we'll reveal something true about ourselves. The images are shown here in chronological order.
